Menard, Joseph W. 81, of East Providence passed away Thursday October 10, 2013 at home. He was the husband of Edith (Davis) Menard. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Walter and Katherine (Clarke) Menard. Joe was Professor Emeritus at the Community College of RI where he served in the Mathematics Department from 1969-1990.
He was a graduate of Pawtucket West High School, where he competed as a diver on the swim team in 1948 and 1949. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. He earned his Ed. B from RIC in 1960 and an Ed M. from RIC in 1964. In 1976 he earned an Ed D. from Nova Southeastern in Florida.
Joe earned many honors while engaged in the RI sports scene. He served six years as swim coach for Pawtucket West High. He played three years of JV basketball at RIC and was the starting goalie for three years for the soccer team. In 1977, he was chosen RIC alumnus of the year, and inducted into the College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also an official for the RI Special Olympics in 1998 and 1999. Joe received an award in 1992 “in recognition and appreciation of outstanding service to the sport of High School Swimming” from the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches of America. In 1995 he
received the 30-year appreciation award for “service and devotion” from the RI Board of Approved Interscholastic Swimming Officials, and in 1997 he received the Joseph L. Tracey Memorial Award for dedication to the Max Read Memorial meets.
More important to Joe than any award was his love for his family and the fun he had with his friends. He will always be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and quick wit.
Joe is survived by wife of 53 years, his two sons Jim Menard of Connecticut (m. Erica March Menard) and Stephen Menard of Pennsylvania (m. Catherine Montagne). He is also survived by his sister Ann Murtha of California and five grandchildren: Alex, David, Victoria, Andy, and Claire. He was the brother of the late Walter, Ernest, Eugene,
Katherine Provost, and Theresa Thibeault.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5-8 PM in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home at 398 Willett Avenue, Riverside RI. A funeral service for Joe will be held on Saturday at 10 AM in the Church of the Epiphany, 1336 Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford RI. Burial will be private.
